Local Producer Profile - New Mexico Soap

WE BELIEVE THAT LOCAL IS MORE THAN A BUZZ WORD- IT'S A WAY OF LIFE.

Since our beginning in 1975, Mountain View Market Co+op has been buying and promoting our local farmers and producers. We currently carry over 400 products grown or made in New Mexico or within 300 miles of our store. More than ever, shoppers are interested in the behind-the-scenes story of how their purchases go from farm to table. Every story is unique and we want to tell them all.

New Mexico Soap - If you've been to the Las Cruces Farmers' & Craft Market on a Saturday morning, chances are you have met the enchanting fragrances wafting from the New Mexico Soap booth.

Mountain View Market Co+op has also been carrying New Mexico Soap's "Ugly Bars" for about seven years. Our shoppers love the unique scents and that these bars are no-nonsense, no-artificial-anything and just plain work. From unscented shea butter or goat milk plain bars, to more exotic fragrances like Lavender & Sage and Dragon's Blood, you're guaranteed to find one you absolutely love - and all of their bars are made with simple ingredients that work! No waxes, no petroleum products, no alcohol - just tried and tested, gentle ingredients that are good for your skin.

In July 2018, after lots of planning and sniffing, we rolled out our signature soap bar in collaboration with New Mexico Soap and called it "That Co+op Smell". We worked with Diane Black, owner and creator of New Mexico Soap, to create a bar that captured the unique scent of the Co+op which leads some shoppers to exclaim upon entering the store, "I love that co-op smell!".

They say necessity is the mother of invention and that is especially true for New Mexico Soap. The company began in 2001 out of the necessity for "real" skin care for the company's owner who had suffered severe burns. With skin grafts throughout, and an ensuing search for just the right fit for their burned and desert-dried skin, their recipe of handcrafted soap was the result!

Their Instagram profile is full of cute photos of their products and customer testimonials to the excellent quality of their favorite soaps and shea butters. Our shoppers love them too. We currently carry seventeen varieties/fragrances of "Ugly Bar" soap, their activated charcoal soap, shaving soaps, and shea butter. More products like loofas, soap savers and bath bombs can be found on their website. New Mexico Soap can ship their products directly to you, so if you live out of state you never have to be without your favorite soaps.

All of New Mexico Soap products are fair trade, gluten-free, cruelty-free and vegan (with the exception of their goat milk soaps).
