Describe your involvement with Mountain View Market Co+op: My wife and I have lived in Las Cruces for five years, and started shopping at Mountain view Market a few years ago. At first, we started going to find better quality food, and we did, but we also found a connection to the community. I did not realize that grocery shopping could be an enjoyable experience. A few years back we went vegetarian and then vegan, the store was new to us, and the ingredients in our new diet were new too. The staff at the Co+op were so helpful and patient with us as they showed us through the aisles and pointed to the product we were looking for. We really enjoy buying local produce and products from New Mexico and really enjoy the events such as "Meet Your Maker" and the Thursday night community dinner. I have not been involved in the Market in any formal way, but I think I go there once a day.
Describe any volunteer or paid experience that you think will serve you as a board member: I am a licensed Architect in New Mexico and a small business owner. I have served on the American Institute of Architects Southern New Mexico Chapter as a Director, President, and Past-president. As an architect, I am always working towards a compromise. I work with various groups, from City or State code officials, to stakeholder groups, to owners, engineers, and other architects. The goal is always to move the project, or the goal forward, to find the best solutions to problems, address the needs of the group and to produce the best possible result. I have volunteered off and on throughout my life, mostly with Habitat for Humanity, but currently, I am not in any volunteer role. My motivation in applying to the Co+op board is to contribute to the success of Co+op and the community so that others, like my wife and I, can enjoy the benefits of the Co+op and the community.
What is, and could be, the Co-op's role in the community?: The Co+op is a hub in the community that brings people together from all over the City. The environment is positive and uplifting, the food is delicious, and the staff is always smiling. As a member, I am proud to buy local. I feel that I am supporting local business owners and making connections. I really enjoy the Thursday night community dinner. I think it is a great way to bring the people together from the community to meet and talk to one another as well as provide a low-cost meal to so many in our community that need it.
Provide a brief personal statement to assist owners as they consider your candidacy: I am from New Mexico, but somewhat new to Las Cruces. Growing up in Albuquerque and moving for school and work has taken me to Austin, TX; Washington, DC, and Tucson, AZ, but nowhere else have I felt more at home. Las Cruces has been kind and welcoming. My wife and I feel that we have been embraced by the community and have grown in our personal and professional lives. We have met so many new friends through the running and mountain biking groups and gotten involved in local politics more than I ever thought.
I recently heard the quote that "you get out what you put in." In terms of the community, I think that certainly holds true. As my wife and I have gotten more involved in the community the more we feel connected, the more friends we meet and the more we enjoy Las Cruces. My goal is to promote the best things about Las Cruces to others and to help ensure that the best parts of Las Cruces, like the Co+op, are successful and continue to be enjoyed by new folks and those that have been here for years.

Describe your involvement with Mountain View Market Co+op: I am a lifetime member of Mountain View Co+op and have shopped at the Co+op since around 1993. Prior to moving to Las Cruces, I shopped at Co-op Markets in other places I lived, which is why I sought out MVM. I believe in the values of cooperative markets; value access to organic, natural foods; and support sustainable agriculture models and local sourcing as much as possible. I really like a lot of the recent changes that have been made, in the last year or two, and believe the Co+op is locally responsive and responsible.
Describe any volunteer or paid experience that you think will serve you as a board member: I have an undergraduate minor in business administration and completed the coursework for a graduate minor in business (HR). Locally, I have worked in Human Resources Management as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), which is the highest designation in the US for the field, in a career spanning more than 20 years. I understand that the Board is to function on a consensus basis, and in my HR work, I have had the responsibility to train Subject Matter Experts (folks we brought in to help us with specialty fields) in the consensus-decision model and guided them through the process on our projects.
What is, and could be, the Co+op's role in the community?: Mountain View Market Co+op is the only local retail consumers cooperative that I know of, and operates to benefit the members and the surrounding communities by following the seven Rochedale principles of cooperatives. As such, it strives to provide whole, natural, organic and locally sourced food and related products (such soaps, nutritional supplements, personal care, and animal care products, etc.) in a socially responsible, socially responsive and reasonably priced way. I would be pleased to be able to help as the Market continues to adapt and evolve with Las Cruces and the related area it serves.
Provide a brief personal statement to assist Owners as they consider your candidacy: I am a vegan and a lifetime member of Mountain View Co+op. I believe in the values of cooperative markets; value access to organic, natural foods; and support sustainable agriculture models and local sourcing as much as possible. I really like a lot of the recent changes that have been made, in the last year or two, and believe the Co+op is locally responsive and responsible. With my many years of experience in business and government administration, including experience with the consensus decision-making model, I believe I would be an effective and useful member of the Board of Directors.
Describe your involvement with Mountain View Market Co+op: I am a former employee of the co-op and want to stay involved in Mountain View's growth.
Describe any volunteer or paid experience that you think will serve you as a board member: I have over 10 years of experience in retail management with 6 of those years in health and wellness. Throughout my career, I have been employed with corporations and independent businesses and have built relationships with vendors catering to those businesses. I have also assisted in coordinating events by recruiting community partners.
What is, and could be, the Co+op's role in the community?: The co-op could be the central point for all things Las Cruces. The co-op could build more relationships with community partners and have a revolving door of talented individuals encouraged to use the community center for classes. We could return the favor by going out to other local businesses in our city and surrounding counties to advocate for supporting local and living environmentally conscious.
Provide a brief personal statement to assist Owners as the consider your candidacy: I love this city. I have lived all over the U.S., but no place can compare to how valued I feel by my Las Cruces family. I am here to listen to your thoughts, help give life to your ideas, and be a voice for your concerns. As a fellow owner, I am here to grow with you and help shape our community to one we can be proud of, and our children can thrive in.
